Preparation

There wasn’t a script for this project, I knew that I just wanted to go out and film and pick what felt right, I had a rough idea that I wanted a lot of walking. The time spent between one place and the next is often the times I feel the most anxious, thinking about the last place I was, the place I am going to or about things far in the past, I thought if the characters in the film are mostly on the move it will help pick up on this frantic energy. I had done some test shots inside my home, one of which made it into the film, the footage of George writing a birthday card with the words being indistinguishable by the audience. Another test shot I did was inside my bedroom, I set up lights and moved objects around however the footage wasn’t quite what I wanted for the film, I did gain experience setting up lighting for the camera by doing this.

Internally, I had a lot of ideas for the character that I found hard to share with my collaborators as it felt very personal to me, exploring dark areas of my own psyche was difficult to be upfront about, there were times when I was very vague with my collaborators which was not helpful on my part, I think in the future I will be upfront from the start of the project and not explain things as the process is going, having a lengthy discussion at the start is much easier than unravelling things as time goes on.

If I were to make another film in the future I would include some dialogue and stiller camera shots, shifting my focus onto less abstract film work in the future is my next goal. I would enjoy writing a script in the future as in my spare time I write a lot of short stories, so to convert these stories into something would be exciting for me. I think writing fiction is a strong part of my skill set, on my next project I will shift my focus towards this and allow for people more talented in the production side of things to make the film. I would also like to make the sound prior to the shooting of the film, having the actors on set reacting to the sound in real time would provide interesting results.
