“He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man”
The idea behind the film was about somebody who psychologically changes themself because they cannot cope with who they are, a literal dissonance in the characters brain, to include dissonance in the music felt right to me. I took a lot of inspiration from the soundtrack to Dario Argento’s 1977 Suspira film, the high pitch, loud, dissonant soundtrack made me feel frantic and stressed as a young teen, this film soundtrack has always really stuck out to me.
A lot of the dissonance came from the ethereal droning of the wine glasses however originally I planned to use a different instrument for the droning. I was going to use an accordion which had some of the reeds stuck however when I made a recording of this it was took up too much space in the mix as it has a lot of range in frequencies, another reason I didn’t use it is because the recording didn’t capture how magnificent the sound and feel of the accordion actually is, I think in the future I will use the accordion as part of a live performance alongside some other performers, it will be more effective in this setting and planning ahead for future collaborations within music as well as film is important to my career aspirations.
