Surveillance & Discomfort

Ring doorbells are a method of personal security, attached to the front of doors they capture the sounds and visuals of passers by using motion detectors, the police have access to the footage from the ring doorbells. Footage from ring doorbells is often posted online in matters irrelevant to security, the footage is used as entertainment.

I feel that if somebody is outside and making noise, a recorder has the right to record them if the person is outside by choice, I feel as though it is unethical to record those working such as delivery men, they don’t have a choice to not be recorded, the police should not have access to the recordings from ring doorbells however, if one wishes to use the ring doorbell footage as evidence then they should be able to submit it, but for the police to have access regardless is an invasion of privacy from the state. Ring doorbell has even used peoples doorbell footage in sponsored content without notifying them, they have a clause buried within their terms of service is a clause that states “You hereby grant Ring and its licensees an unlimited, irrevocable, fully paid and royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide right to re-use, distribute, store, delete, translate, copy, modify, display, sell, create derivative works from and otherwise exploit such Shared Content for any purpose and in any media formats in any media channels without compensation to you.”
