I recently composed a sound piece centred around a sense of place. This was one of my first compositions that I would say is a piece of sound rather than a piece of music as it is more noise focused than melody focused. I took the sound of chanting and manipulated it along with some time stretching of various other sounds I had collected. I wanted to create a sense of discomfort to go alongside the chanting I had captured which is why I included sporadic, time stretched, reversed sounds. These sounds sounded uncomfortable as well as the timing of some of them being more unexpected than others creating slight anticipation.
The reasoning behind aiming for discomfort to be shown within my piece was to do with how uncomfortable I felt with the sound of the chanting in the moment of recording, I recorded the sound of this chanting in a public toilet behind the barrier of a cubicle. I didn’t like that a group of men could take over a public space using their sound and wanted to express my distaste for the side of football culture that resides in violence.
