Chris Watson: The Art Of Location Recording

Reading this article was my first introduction to Chris Watson. Chris’s process has many challenges, as I was reading this article I began to think about how these challenges might translate into his works. Chris’s process when location recording can sometimes involve using long cables in order to record protected species, I find the idea of recording something and not being present in the place of recording interesting as the source of sound is almost separated from the recorder, I want to incorporate something like this into my practice as it will allow me to capture completely candid clips of sound which could be used to make a piece feel real.

Musique concrète and Pierre Schaeffer isn’t what I expected to have influenced Chris’s works as the Musique concrète pieces I have listened to have all been more melodic, musical and rhythmic, this is probably a testament to how little I have delved into Music concrète.
